Top 5 Favorite Hair Masks May 27, 2020
Unfortunately, flat irons, blow dryers and curling irons have been a very significant part of my life for almost my entire existence. I recently confronted my mom about how she should have taught me to love my curls, and she told me plain and simple, “It was easier.” Anyone who has super curly hair understands the struggle. We don’t have the luxury of hopping out of the shower and going about our day. There is a lot of product involved to even think about keeping our hair down. So, when it’s straight, there is no stressing about spending hours trying to fix the nest that acquired while sleeping. However, there is always a downside to making things easier. Nineteen years of frying my beautiful locks completely destroyed my natural curls.
I was always curious why the texture of my hair was so bizarre. The roots were crimpy and curly, but the rest was just straight with a slight wave. I eventually dove into hours and hours – ok, honestly days and days – of research to figure out what the heck was wrong with my hair. Finally, I found these women doing “big chop” and “natural hair journey” videos. Absolutely life-changing. I realized my mysterious hair texture was all because of years of torturing my poor curls. I immediately started my natural hair journey. I cut out all of the blow-drying, straightening, and curling irons.
Then, invest in hair masks, creams, oils – basically, everything under the sun that the internet was telling me would help. You know, making this whole journey to your natural hair easy and quick. Three years later and I can definitely attest to the fact that it is not easy or quick. The downside to trying to make that (hopefully) easier and quick was spending money I didn’t really have. Therefore, I have become quite invested in making my own hair masks and conditioning treatments.
Although I love a good homemade concoction, I still have a soft spot for my favorite hair masks and conditioners. Shea Moisture has to be one of my favorite brands for hair care products. I used the Strengthen & Restore Treatment Masque during the first couple of months of going all-natural. The smell is not amazing, but that should not stop you. It is an amazing product and you will see that with the results. Maui Moisture’s Heal and Hydrate + Shea Butter mask on the other hand smells amazing! It also makes your hair insanely soft and smooth. Though it is loaded with great ingredients, that amazing smell definitely does not come from the coconut oil. Looking past the extra additives, it is one of the few masks that isn’t a complete scam. Check out the rest of my go-to hair masks down below.
